LA Times article on nonprofit center for new immigrants

We ran across an inspirational LA Times article on those new to the SGV, particularly immigrants from Asian countries are being helped by the Asian Youth Center in San Gabriel. Classes including after school programs and parenting classes. Full article at LA Times… | Link to center website

Light rail to South El Monte being pondered

The MTA’s board of director is considering spending $10 million to research the feasibility of two rail lines between East Los Angeles and South El Monte/Whittier areas. One possible new line would run parallel to the 60 freeway. Routes through Whittier and Beverly Blvd. were shot down with too many hurdles to overcome. According to sources, the politicians of El Monte, Industry, Rosemead, Montebello, Monterey Park, and South El Monte are supportive of the light rail along the 60 freeway route. Other routes being considered include one along Beverly Blvd. Once the decision is made though, it will require a scramble for funds in 2022 and probably will get completed around 2033. So keep on driving your cars for now…

Halloween-Oktoberfest Street Faire in Rosemead

The city of Rosemead is throwing a 3rd annual Halloween-Oktoberfest party on the corner of Mission and Encinita Ave on the 24th (note its not on the 31st). There will be 2 stages, food, crafts, game booths, and carnival rides. There will also be a car show and Rosemead’s Got Talent for youth show. More details here… | Map here…

Free flu shots

Pasadena public libraries are offering free flu shots during the month of October.

Flu shots will be on offered 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 24 at La Pintoresca Branch Library, 1355 N. Raymond Ave.; and noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Hastings Branch Library, 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd.

U2’s Rose Bowl Concert live on YouTube

If you won’t be able to catch rock band pioneers U2’s concert at the Rose Bowl in person this upcoming Sunday, don’t fret. It will be broadcasted live on YouTube for free. Catch it Sunday at 8:30 pm at www.youtube.com/U2/

Update: If you’re lucky enough to have tickets, Metro Rail will be running later than usual for the Gold, Red, Blue and Green lines. Go mass transit! Try it…you might like it.

NFL team coming to SGV?

On October 14th, the California state Senate wiped away the last hurdles to a proposed football stadium in City of Industry. The developer of the stadium predicts that an NFL team will temporarily play at Rose Bowl or Coliseum in 2011 until the $800 million stadium is completed in 2013. Whether or not the NFL will actually fully support the idea and sanction a team here is yet to be known. Read more at SGV Tribune…

Expect extra traffic on 10 freeway

According to the LA Times, beginning in May, Caltrans will be doing major renovations on 10 freeway off ramps. Additionally with some research on Caltrans’ site bridges are part of the work. The days affected are Friday, Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday.

Governor may end 710 freeway debacle

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger may sign into a new law that would bar Caltrans from linking up the 710 to Pasadena via an above ground freeway. Thus the only other choice would be a massive tunnel project. Currently the only north south freeway going into Pasadena is the nation’s oldest freeway the 110 is severely antiquated.
